Benefits of Choosing SMART Custom Rotational Molding for Your Next Project

January 31, 2025 By ScottF

Quality Products Start with Custom Rotational Molding

For decades, custom rotational molding has been the go-to choice for high-quality, tight-tolerance plastic parts. This technology has been further refined through SMART molding developments, which offer a range of added benefits. If you’re unsure whether this type of custom rotational molding is right for you, this blog will help you make an informed decision for your business.

What is SMART Custom Rotational Molding?

Traditional rotational molding involves heating a plastic polymer within a mold, which is then spun inside a specialized machine. The polymer coats the inside of the mold, and then is allowed to cool. Once removed from the mold, you have a tight-tolerance hollow plastic part.

SMART molding builds upon this traditional method. With better sensors and more controlled heating and cooling, it creates better products with less waste and energy usage. If you’d like to learn more about the intricacies of SMART molding, view our in-depth blog here.

Advantages of SMART Molding

Cost-Effectiveness

Compared to injection molding, SMART molding creates production efficiency by removing the need for fuel cost and ovens. This makes it an attractive option for high volume production runs. Creating intricate shapes and consistent wall thickness are easier with SMART molding.

Durability and Strength

Rotationally molded parts are known for their strength and resistance to wear and tear. The even distribution of material during the molding process ensures that the finished product is free from weak points, making it ideal for applications requiring long-lasting durability.

In many cases, companies are able to switch from metal components to a part made of a plastic polymer. For example, farmers used to use metal corn head snouts on their machinery, which were heavy and prone to corrosion. Now, they can use corn head snouts made out of a plastic polymer. This reduces the weight of the machinery and eliminates the chance of corrosion, saving money in the long run.

Quality and Consistency

This kind of molding technology offers unparalleled controllability, which ensures identical part production across all machines. With direct electric tool heating, zoned control features, controlled cooling, and internal temperature monitoring, you’ll receive a tight-tolerance, high-quality part, every time.

Efficiency in Production

SMART custom rotational molding offers significant productivity improvements compared to traditional rotational molding. With SMART machinery, production rates can reach 4,000 to 5,000 parts per tool. This is significantly higher than the 2,000 to 2,500 parts per tool that rotational molding makes possible.

Environmental Considerations

SMART molding offers a range of sustainability benefits that traditional molding can’t beat. Using our machinery, we reduced energy consumption for a client by 35%, which benefits the environment. Additionally, that same customer experienced a material consumption decrease of 11%. This not only reduces the carbon footprint of the company but also offers cost savings.
